Others in attendance were less concerned with the postponement and have their sights set on budget deliberations later this year when city council will set the financial plan for the city for the next four years.

“All of the hard work and hard decisions are going to be made in the budget process,” said Christine Laing with the Calgary Alliance for Common Good. “You need hard rules, you need hard money and those come with really hard decisions about where you put resources and how you allocate them.

The deferral did not dampen the spirits of a group of citizens gathered outside city hall to show support for the strategy.

Organized by the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good, the peaceful demonstration featured citizens wearing green scarves and arm bands.

Angela McIntyre with the Calgary Climate Hub said she didn’t think the postponement was that big of a deal.

“We are disappointed that they’re not actually going to put it for the climate strategy for today, but we’re all here in support of it,” said McIntyre.

Several groups focused on improving Calgary’s transit system say such a strategy is greatly needed if safety is going to be fixed. Christine Laing with the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good said increasing police presence is not the answer the city needs to address safety issues.

“The only thing this will accomplish is to allow a handful of well-dressed Calgarians to pretend we don’t live in a society that chronically defunds mental health support and harm reduction,” said Laing. “This isn’t an officer space.”

The city advocacy group Calgary Alliance for the Common Good has launched a campaign to support the IGP motion.

“Creating an Indigenous Gathering Place is not only a value to Indigenous peoples, but also to non-Indigenous peoples,” their website reads.

The Calgary Climate Hub (CCH) joined with the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good to advance their agenda on meaningful climate action at city hall Monday. In front of a gathering of city councillors, the environmental groups presented bags filled with shortbread; to indicate they feel time is short to take action on climate change.

Another option for voters choosing a candidate is to use one's networks. Friends talk with friends, and more formally, many industry and non-profit groups try to help members by questioning candidates and sharing the information.

Adrita Haque, an engineer in training who volunteers with Calgary Climate Hub, has been in the thick of that. She's been helping Calgary Alliance for the Common Good organize 'coffee with a candidate' meetings, but mostly in the central wards where most volunteers live.

A mayoral forum featuring four of the top contenders in Calgary’s mayoral race will take place Thursday via Zoom.

The Calgary Alliance for the Common Good and Action Dignity are partnering to hold the online mayoral forum at 7 p.m.

The exhibit features work from 17 Indigenous artists and is located in Southcentre Mall's Art Corner on the second floor.

Tapisa Kilabuk is one of the event organizers with the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good that's collaborating with Colouring it Forward Reconciliation Society for the six week long exhibit.

"Just having this kind of representation in Calgary is just so wonderful and so beautiful and so inclusive," said Kilabuk. "When I was here the other day helping with the orange shirts and I was overwhelmed with emotion because I've never seen anything like this before."
