Calgary GOTV Assembly Draws Approximately 175 Participants, Builds Commitments to Mobilize Thousands of Voters

CALGARY, AB — Approximately 175 representatives from the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good’s 32 member organizations gathered at Scarboro United Church on September 16 to launch their Get Out the Vote (GOTV) Campaign. This is the second phase of their Vote for the Common Good campaign ahead of Alberta’s October 19 referendum. Alliance member organizations made commitments through the campaign’s Pledge to Vote initiative to mobilize an estimated 16,000 to 20,000 voters.

Calgary Alliance Urges Council: No Repeal Without a Real Plan for Housing

With no replacement plan on the table, advocates warn repeal could stall housing progress and raise costs.

The Calgary Alliance for the Common Good is urging City Council not to repeal citywide rezoning (R-CG) without a clear replacement plan, as a public hearing on the issue is scheduled for March 23.

Council is currently considering reversing the rezoning policy, which allows for more duplexes, rowhouses, and secondary suites across residential areas. The Alliance warns that removing the policy without a viable alternative could slow housing development, put federal funding at risk, and undermine recent progress toward affordability.

“Calgary cannot afford to move backwards on housing,” said Kersi Bird, spokesperson for the Calgary Alliance For The Common Good. “If Council chooses to change course, it must do so responsibly. Repealing rezoning without a real plan risks slowing supply and undoing the progress we’re beginning to see.”

Ryan Andersen with the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good recognized that elements of the recommended housing strategy, like removing parking minimums and going to one common land-use designation, became politicized before Thursday’s meeting.

“What we expect from our leaders is to cut through that politicizing and actually address the needs of Calgarians. They’re real and so real leadership addresses the real needs of communities,” Andersen said.
