Press Conference Calls for Clear Housing Plan After Rezoning Repeal
On April 13, 2026, community organizations, advocates, and students gathered outside Calgary City Hall for a press conference following City Council’s decision to repeal the citywide rezoning policy.
Speaking on behalf of Calgary Alliance for the Common Good, Kersi Bird, spokesperson for the CACG, emphasized that the issue goes beyond zoning policy and speaks directly to people’s ability to live with dignity in the city.

“Without a clear replacement plan, we risk stalling progress on housing affordability and access,” Bird said, urging Council to move quickly in presenting a concrete and actionable framework. He noted that for many Calgarians, the housing crisis is not theoretical but an everyday reality affecting stability, opportunity, and community wellbeing.
Other speakers at the press conference echoed similar concerns, calling on the City to provide a transparent timeline and a comprehensive strategy to address the ongoing housing crisis.
The event reflects growing public pressure on the City Council to respond with a clear plan after the repeal, which followed days of public hearings and debate over the future of housing development in Calgary.
