Anti-Racism Training - Feb 21st & 28th by the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre (ACLRC)

Understanding Racism and Racial Discrimination

4-hour online workshop over 2 days : Wed Feb 21 (11am-1pm) & Wed Feb 28 (11am-1pm)

Everyone has their own experiences and perspectives on racism and racial discrimination; we all have biases, and it is important to understand how these biases play out in our daily work and personal lives and how they may influence (albeit unconsciously) our interactions with others. As an alliance it is important that we develop a shared understanding of this issue and what act (s) we can take when incidents happen. As such, as part of our internal work on anti-racism the Calgary Alliance has arranged for the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre (ACLRC) to deliver their powerful Anti-Racism workshop at no cost to attendees via Zoom.

The course is designed for individuals to develop personal awareness and behavioural change and provide steps to begin implementing systemic change in their organizations.

Topics covered include:

  • The Alberta Human Rights Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
  • Canada's History of Racism. Most examples folks know nothing about, including current examples.
  • Terminology related to Racism including the relationship of Power to Racism and the difference between Racism and Racial Discrimination
  • How and where we learn about Racism, though unconsciously, and how to uncover it in experiential/interactive exercises
  • What we can do about it personally and systemically.
  • A general look at cultural competency.
  • How to respond to incidents of racism which happen to oneself or to others.
