Ward 9 Affordable Housing

Will you work with us to address the affordable housing crisis and implement Calgary’s Housing Strategy? How will you work with us to expand and better coordinate rent supports for renters in crisis? How will you ensure that sufficient land is made available for affordable housing and is zoned appropriately before being released?

Answer

Harrison M. Clark: Yes -

I have put forward a proposal in my strategic plan to create a city made, modern renters tool kit. This of course would be in partnership with our renter advocate groups. I think the city should do a better job of acknowledging that many of our citizens are renters and that we have a responsibility to support and protect them.

I have put forward two proposals in my strategic plan. More efforts need to be made to prioritize the permits and land acquisitions of the NFP organizations who specialize in building affordable housing. I would like to revisit our existing strategy and make sure we are doing everything we can to provide an efficient and effective process.

Secondly, in Ward 9 specifically, I would like to review our legacy general industrial lands - of which we have acres and acres - on the borders of Ogden, Inglewood, Ramsay and Dover. Appropriate land use changes here could allow us to expand the residential footprint of these historic neighbourhoods.
